USD/CAD Rallies on Escalating Trade Tensions

The US dollar's value against the Canadian dollar has risen as trade tensions between the two countries escalate. The Canadian dollar weakened after US-Canada trade talks broke down over the weekend, with the U.S. imposing 50% tariffs on around $20 billion worth of Canadian exports.

However, higher oil prices could provide some support for the loonie due to Canada's major role as an oil exporter. The recent strength in crude prices has kept inflation concerns alive.

This week may bring a fresh catalyst for USD/CAD with U.S. inflation data due on Wednesday and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh speaking at Jackson Hole on Friday. A hotter PCE reading or hawkish comments from Warsh could lift the dollar, while a softer inflation reading combined with elevated oil prices could favor the Canadian dollar.
