USD/JPY Bounces Back After Finance Minister's Warning
The USD/JPY currency pair showed resilience in Tokyo foreign exchange trading on July 24, recovering from an early dip triggered by Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama's verbal warning against yen weakness.
Katayama stated that 'it is a shared recognition between Japan and the US that excessive currency volatility is undesirable,' adding that Japan 'will respond appropriately at any time as needed' and 'will take resolute measures decisively.'
However, she refrained from commenting on specific exchange rate levels, saying, 'I will refrain from making any remarks on that.' The brief dip in the pair's price was limited, and the dollar regained its footing.
The market participants increasingly view the risk of actual currency intervention by Japanese authorities as diminished. Despite Katayama's reference to 'resolute measures,' there has been no concrete sign of action.
