USD/JPY Flatlines Near 159.50 Amid Intervention Risks
The USD/JPY pair is trading relatively flat near 159.40 during Asian trading hours on Thursday, with limited upside potential due to the risk of coordinated intervention in currency markets by US and Japanese authorities.
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama revealed earlier this month that a joint intervention between the US and Japan aimed to address recent sharp fluctuations in the Japanese Yen's exchange rate. US President Donald Trump confirmed the US' participation in the intervention, calling it 'a signal of friendship.'
Jesper Koll, expert director at Monex Group, noted that 'intervention has scared markets but hasn't stopped the laws of finance.' He believes that as long as Japan's cost of money is lower than the return overseas, carry trades will continue.
The Bank of Japan may consider an additional interest rate increase at its next September policy meeting in response to rising inflation risks. Scotiabank analysts highlight potential tension between US officials and Japan's government over monetary policy, with USD/JPY resistance around 159.50 and support around 158.50.
