USD/JPY Stalls at 160 as Treasury's Bond Purchases Cast a Shadow
The USD/JPY pair has stalled just below the psychologically significant 160 level, unable to gain momentum despite several attempts.
This stagnation can be attributed in part to the U.S. Treasury Department's announcement that it would double the size of its liquidity-support purchase operations targeting longer-dated nominal coupon bonds.
The move sent long-term U.S. yields tumbling, effectively undercutting dollar-buying momentum and causing USD/JPY to stall in the upper 159 range.
Market participants have dubbed the 160-162 zone the 'Bessent ceiling,' suggesting that the bond-market stabilization measures spearheaded by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are capping dollar strength.
