USD/JPY Surges as Treasuries Rebound and Fed Signals Hawkish Stance
The USD/JPY currency pair surged 0.52% on August 20 to $158.963, as investors continued to favor the US dollar over the Japanese yen.
The upward movement was driven by a rebound in U.S. Treasury yields, which rose after a brief pullback. Institutional investors questioned whether the government's bond buyback initiative would provide lasting relief, leading to an increase in yields.
The wide interest rate differential between the US and Japan continued to attract capital to the dollar, with benchmark U.S. yields rising towards recent multi-month highs.
Hawkish details from the Federal Reserve's July FOMC meeting minutes also supported the US dollar, as policymakers expressed concerns about upside inflation risks and hinted at further policy tightening if inflation remains elevated.
