USD/JPY Surges Past 159.00 on Escalating Iran Sanctions
The Japanese Yen has weakened against the US Dollar as the Greenback gains strength following the escalation of Iran sanctions. The USD/JPY pair has risen above the 159.00 mark, a level where the Bank of Japan intervened in July to curb its appreciation.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's announcement of stricter sanctions on Iran has increased demand for safe-haven assets like the US Dollar. This has pushed the USD/JPY pair above the threshold, but it remains below the four-decade high of just under 164.00 reached at the end of July.
Kazuo Ueda, Governor of the Bank of Japan, had previously highlighted the Middle East as a region to watch for price and currency fluctuations due to the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran.
