USD/JPY Torn Apart by Hawkish BOJ and Uncertain Fed
The USD/JPY currency pair has been caught in a crossfire of conflicting signals from the Bank of Japan (BoJ) and the US Federal Reserve (Fed), leading to a volatile market situation. The BoJ's hawkish stance, with Governor Ueda's comments reinforcing expectations of a rate hike as early as this month, has boosted the yen and pushed USD/JPY down nearly 2% in a single session.
This development comes after a joint US-Japan operation last July, which increased concerns about intervention risk. BOJ board member Hajime Takata has floated the possibility of outsized or back-to-back hikes to contain inflation. Meanwhile, the Fed's decision on interest rates remains uncertain, with markets split roughly 50-60% on a September move.
The technical analysis suggests that USD/JPY has broken below its long-term ascending trendline and is now testing critical support beneath the 100-period EMA. A confirmed break below this level could expose the pair to further declines, while a bullish scenario would see buyers defend the 155.00-156.00 support and reclaim the descending trendline.
