USD/JPY Treads Near 160 as Markets Eye Japan's Inflation Data
The USD/JPY exchange rate is hovering near 160 as markets await Japan's inflation data, which will be closely watched to assess whether domestic price pressures are strong enough to support further Bank of Japan tightening.
Japan's core CPI slowed to 1.8% year-on-year in July, in line with expectations and below the BoJ's 2% target, reducing some of the urgency for additional tightening.
The recent intervention by coordinated US-Japan action has triggered a sharp decline in the yen, but much of that strength has since faded, reinforcing the view that official action can slow depreciation but struggles to reverse it while US-Japanese interest-rate differentials remain wide.
A stronger-than-expected inflation reading could revive expectations that the BoJ will need to tighten again, narrowing the yield differential with the US and potentially providing fundamental support for the yen.
