USD Surges as Fed's Warsh Signals Possible Rate Hike Amid Inflation Concerns
The US Federal Reserve has boosted the value of the US dollar following a hawkish speech by Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole World Economic Forum on Friday. The market had expected a more dovish tone from Warsh, but he stated that if underlying inflation is not convincingly heading towards the Fed's 2% target, the Fed may need to raise interest rates.
The S&P500 fell in response to Warsh's speech, as corporations do not like talks of interest rate rises. The price of crude oil, however, rose due to increased aggression in Iran.
Meanwhile, the New Zealand dollar has been strong for weeks, and its upcoming interest rate decision on September 16 is expected to drive it stronger if rates are raised. However, NZDUSD has already pulled back significantly, indicating potential weakness.
The Bank of Canada's interest rate decision on September 16 will also be closely watched, as it may impact CAD strength due to ongoing trade talks between the US and Canada.
