USDCAD Continues Sideways Trend Amid Cautious Central Banks
The US dollar (USD) has experienced a slight appreciation against the Canadian dollar (CAD), but the broader chart picture suggests a prolonged consolidation. The interest rate differential remains a key driver, with the US benchmark rate at 3.75% and Canada's at 2.25%. This gap has led to the CAD's depreciation over recent months.
The Bank of Canada is not signaling any drastic shifts in monetary policy, with a slight economic improvement ruling out major adjustments. The market expects an 80% probability that rates will stay put at 2.25% during the September meeting. In contrast, the US Federal Reserve has a 56.9% chance of a rate hike in September.
The bond market dynamics have converged, with the 10-year yield in both countries dropping. However, the yield spread continues to favor the US, keeping a lid on any sustained rally for the CAD.
