USDJPY Surges as BOJ Hike Bets Strengthen with Fed Rate Speculation

The USDJPY currency pair has seen a modest gain of 0.26% to 159.12, driven by growing expectations for a Bank of Japan (BOJ) interest rate hike and renewed speculation about a Federal Reserve rate increase.

This uptick in the US dollar against the Japanese yen reflects a complex interplay of monetary policy expectations between both sides of the Pacific. The BOJ's hawkish stance is fueled by rising inflation, with the July core Consumer Price Index (CPI) showing an acceleration to 1.8% year-on-year.

This has bolstered market expectations for a rate increase at the BOJ's September 17-18 meeting, with swaps pricing in roughly an 80% chance of a hike. The hawkish shift has pushed Japanese 10-year government bond yields to around 2.89%, levels not seen in decades.
