USW Union Warns Workers Paying Price for Canada-U.S. Trade War Tensions
The United Steel Workers (USW) union is calling on the governments of Canada and the U.S. to resume trade talks, citing the negative impact of the ongoing trade war on workers in both countries.
Roxanne Brown, international president of the USW, said that workers are paying the price for a dispute they did not create, with market disruption affecting jobs in various industries, including steel and aluminum.
Brown emphasized that when one country's workers face uncertainty, it has ripple effects across the entire North American economy, highlighting the importance of cooperation between Canada and the U.S.
A recent study by Trevor Tombe, a professor of economics at the University of Calgary, estimated that 90,000 jobs could be lost in Canada due to the tariffs, with approximately two-thirds of those losses coming from exporters directly affected by the tariffs.
