Vance Questions Dollar Supremacy Amid Trade Tensions
The US dollar's status as the world's primary reserve currency has been a top priority for the Trump administration. However, some in Trump's inner circle have questioned whether this is beneficial to the United States.
JD Vance, Vice President at the time, appeared to suggest that reserve-currency status may not be good for the country in an old video shared by historian Phil Magness. Vance stated that it allows consumers to consume cheaply, implying that this has led to a degradation of the industrial base and enabled the US to live beyond its means.
Vance's position is consistent with his isolationist, America First agenda, which aims to put American interests first. He argued that hosting the world's reserve currency functions as a 'resource curse' that enables the country to maintain a high standard of living while degrading its industrial base.
