Venezuela Opposition Joins Government to Retrieve Stalled Gold Amid Earthquake Rebuilding Efforts
Venezuela's rare consensus on retrieving gold from the Bank of England has emerged in response to the recent earthquake disaster, which claimed over 6,000 lives and left a trail of destruction. The administration headed by Delcy Rodriguez and various opposition factions have put aside their differences to work together on this initiative.
A joint declaration was issued by both negotiating teams stating that the gold is needed to finance rebuilding efforts. According to Ramon Lopez, a legislator affiliated with the 2015 National Assembly delegation, the disbursement of these assets would hinge on comprehensive planning and oversight protocols, with a framework prioritizing housing, medical facilities, and educational institutions in the impacted zones.
The monies would be placed into accounts managed by the US Treasury Department and undergo scrutiny by external auditing entities prior to any release. Lopez emphasized that this arrangement does not entail any quid pro quo linking the gold's release to changes in the Supreme Court of Justice.
Rodriguez had previously corresponded with King Charles in July to petition for the bullion's release from its location on Threadneedle Street. The British Foreign Office clarified that the UK government holds no role in the judicial proceedings determining the gold's ownership and reaffirmed its backing for a democratic shift in Venezuela.
