Venezuela Seeks Release of $4 Billion Frozen Gold Reserves

The Venezuelan government and its opposition have joined forces to pressure the Bank of England into releasing approximately $4 billion in frozen gold reserves.

The funds, equivalent to about 31 tonnes of gold, were sequestered in London vaults since 2018 due to a diplomatic crisis sparked by contested elections and UK recognition of an opposition leader as Venezuela's legitimate interim president.

Following intense US-backed back-channel negotiations, both factions agree that the frozen assets must be repatriated to stabilize a domestic economy ravaged by hyperinflation, sanctions, and infrastructural decay.
