Venezuela Turns to UK Gold Reserves Amid Inflation Crisis
Venezuela's National Assembly chief Jorge Rodriguez announced that the government will focus on rebuilding efforts and recovering gold reserves worth an estimated $4 billion held in the Bank of England's vaults. This decision comes as monthly inflation surged to 20% in Venezuela, with year-on-year inflation standing at a staggering 575.9%. The Bank of England has refused to release some 31 metric tons of Venezuelan gold due to concerns over the legitimacy of President Nicolas Maduro's government.
The devastating twin earthquakes that hit Venezuela in June contributed to the rising inflation rate, disrupting the distribution of goods and causing widespread damage. Rodriguez stated that the government will concentrate efforts on promoting the recovery of Venezuela's international assets in the Bank of England to aid in reconstruction efforts. This includes projects aimed at rebuilding households, health capacities, electricity availability, and clearing rubble.
