Vietnam-Canada Sci-Tech Ties Get Boost with Clean Energy, Aerospace Focus
As Vietnam and Canada strengthen their bilateral relationship, they're looking to make science and technology (sci-tech) cooperation a key pillar of their partnership.
The two countries have been discussing upgrading their Comprehensive Partnership framework, which was established nearly a decade ago. They've identified new areas for collaboration, including artificial intelligence, quantum technology, semiconductors, energy, the green economy, and aerospace.
Clean energy is seen as an area where Vietnam can move quickly with Canada. The country has significant strengths in clean technology, energy efficiency, environmental technology, and emissions reduction solutions, according to Assoc. Prof. Vu Viet Hung, Chairman of the Canadian-Vietnamese Science and Education Foundation (CVSE).
Hung noted that Vietnam's demand for energy transition is surging, with the country facing lower production costs, climate adaptation, and compliance with carbon standards in top export markets.
The two sides are considering specific pilot projects, such as 'green factories' or 'green agricultural processing' facilities inside Vietnam within 12 to 18 months. Vietnamese firms could provide sites, identify needs, and deploy technologies while Canadian companies supply solutions for energy, water, and waste management or emissions measurement.
Hung also identified aerospace as a long-term strategic area, with Canada's commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific providing Vietnam an opportunity to drive cooperation in civilian and dual-use technologies.
