Volkswagen Rally Can't Offset European Shares' Weekly Decline Amid Inflation Fears

European shares closed the week on a downward trend due to concerns over inflation and rising interest rates. Despite this, Volkswagen's stock surged by 5.9% after its supervisory board agreed on a turnaround plan, lifting the broader European autos index by 1.1%. The STOXX 600 benchmark finished at 649.88 points on Friday, capping a week with an overall decline of 0.8%.

The market's volatility was fueled by escalating conflict in the Middle East, which pushed crude prices higher and added to investor worries about sticky inflation, government debt, and prolonged central bank tightening. The U.S. non-farm payrolls report also had a significant impact on sentiment, signaling ongoing stability in the labor market and reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates later this month.

Investors are now looking to next week's U.S. consumer inflation print for a clearer signal on the Fed's trajectory. Eric Merlis, managing director and co-head of global markets at Citizens, said that the latest report gives the Fed 'more ammunition to tighten in September.' The prospect of higher interest rates has added pressure to global equities just as European economies struggle with sluggish growth and rising energy costs.
