Volkswagen Rally Steadies European Shares Amid Inflation Concerns
European shares closed out the week on Friday with losses, but Volkswagen's significant gain helped to steady the market. The STOXX 600 index ticked up just 0.1% to finish at 649.88 points after a volatile week.
The weekly decline of 0.8% was fueled by rising tensions in the Middle East and higher crude prices, as well as ongoing concerns over inflation, government debt, and prolonged central bank tightening. A resilient U.S. non-farm payrolls report added to investor worries about the Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory.
However, Volkswagen's 5.9% jump to a two-month high on Friday provided support for European bourses late in the session. The automaker's turnaround agreement with its supervisory board and unions helped alleviate some of its pressing issues, including U.S. import tariffs and stagnant European markets.
