Volkswagen Rises Amid European Market Decline Ahead of US Jobs Data
European stock markets were down on Friday ahead of the closely watched US jobs data release. The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell by 0.2% to 648.08 points, while Germany's DAX and London's FTSE dropped 0.1% and 0.2%, respectively. France's CAC 40 also dipped by 0.2%. Volkswagen was the top gainer in the DAX index, rising 5.7%, after its supervisory board struck a turnaround agreement that averted an escalation with unions and shareholders.
The automaker faces pressure from US import tariffs, a stagnant European market, and aggressive Chinese rivals that have hurt its margin and hammered the stock. Despite Friday's gain, Volkswagen's shares are still down over 20% so far this year. Senior market analyst Fiona Cincotta said the turnaround agreement was 'a move in the right direction' but would take more than just this announcement to see a sustained share price recovery.
Banking stocks fell 0.7%, reversing some of their recent strong gains, after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller's comments on Thursday eased concerns about tighter monetary policy. Meanwhile, Brent crude traded around $96 a barrel and was on track for its steepest weekly gain since mid-July. European economies are vulnerable to rising oil prices due to their reliance on energy imports.
