Waimakariri Economy Thrives as GDP Growth Surpasses National Averages
The Waimakariri district in New Zealand has seen its economy continue to outperform national trends, according to the latest Infometrics Quarterly Economic Monitor. Through the year to June 2026, economic growth, consumer spending, and business activity all exceeded national averages.
The report shows GDP growth of 2.6 percent in Waimakariri, significantly higher than New Zealand's 1.7 percent. Business numbers increased by 3.1%, consumer spending rose 3.3%, and tourism expenditure climbed 10.1%. Unemployment remained low at 3.2%, compared to 5.4% nationally.
Enterprise North Canterbury Business Support Manager Miles Dalton attributes the district's resilience to its diverse economy. 'The data highlights the strength of Waimakariri's economy,' he said. While some indicators were not as positive, with non-residential building consents falling by 20.6%, the overall picture is one of broad-based growth.
