Wall Street Stuck in Holding Pattern Ahead of Warsh Speech
The US stock market is in a holding pattern on Friday as investors await a highly anticipated speech by Kevin Warsh, the head of the Federal Reserve. The S&P 500 added 0.1% in early trading, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 89 points or 0.2%. Meanwhile, the bond market remained relatively steady with less than half an hour to go before Warsh's speech at the annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Warsh has been adamant that he wants to give financial markets fewer clues about the Fed's plans for interest rates, allowing them to react to incoming data rather than speculation. However, with inflation remaining above the Fed's 2% target, investors are looking for clarity on whether Warsh's tough talk will be backed up by action.
The Fed has kept its main interest rate steady since December, despite higher rates potentially improving inflation but also slowing down the economy and hurting investment prices. President Donald Trump, who appointed Warsh, has been vocal about wanting lower interest rates.
