Wall Street Surges as Waller Signals Support for Steady Interest Rates
Wall Street's stock indexes rose at the start of trading on September 3 after Federal Reserve official Christopher Waller said he was prepared to support keeping interest rates steady this month if inflation data confirmed easing pressures.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 394.74 points, or 0.74%, to 53,456.69, while the S&P 500 rose 41.29 points, or 0.54%, to 7,707.89. The Nasdaq Composite gained 160.20 points, or 0.61%, to 26,378.03.
Waller's comments influenced rate expectations, with traders scaling back their bets on a potential rate hike. Despite this shift in rhetoric, the probability of a rate increase in September remains nearly 48%.
Investors are waiting for Friday's U.S. employment report, while also cautioning against overestimating its significance, as controlling inflation remains Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's top priority.
