Waller Takes Center Stage as Warsh Stays Tight-Lipped at Jackson Hole

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is set to speak at the Jackson Hole global central bank symposium on Friday, but market participants expect him to refrain from giving clear guidance on interest rates. This deliberate opacity has become a hallmark of his leadership style since taking office.

The real attention-grabber for bond traders will be next Wednesday's remarks by Governor Christopher Waller, who is scheduled to discuss the inflation outlook and the Fed's policy response. His speech comes just two days before the blackout period ahead of the September 15-16 FOMC meeting.

Waller has shown a knack for conveying the policy reaction function through his comments, which can have significant implications for market expectations. In July, he explicitly stated that if core inflation ran hot again, the Fed would need to consider a near-term rate hike.
