Warsh Aims to Break Cycle of Inflation, Restore Monetary Restraint

The Federal Reserve's new chairman, Kevin Warsh, has made it clear that he will not tolerate persistently elevated inflation. This stance is a refreshing change from the past four decades of inflationary policies that have led to a bloated balance sheet and reduced buying power.

According to economist Alvaro Vargas Llosa, the problem started under Alan Greenspan in the late 1980s when he began systematically printing money and manipulating interest rates. This marked the beginning of an inflationary era that would last for 40 years.

The Fed's balance sheet has grown to a whopping $6.7 trillion, and economic growth during this period has been considerably lower than during the 1950s and 1960s under William McChesney Martin, who practiced monetary restraint.

Warsh's commitment to shrinking the bloated balance sheet and keeping interest rates above what politicians would ideally want in an election year comes with a risk of triggering a recession. However, this is seen as a necessary step to undo four decades of inflationary folly and set the ground for more robust economic growth.
