Warsh Confronts Double Threat of Trumpflation and AI-Driven Inflation
New Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is facing a serious challenge in fighting inflation. He has identified two major sources of price hikes: Trumpflation and AI-driven inflation.
Trumpflation, driven by President Donald Trump's policies, has lifted the US inflation rate above modest levels. The Iran war has had a significant impact on energy prices, causing fuel costs to rise. This has led to higher consumer prices, with some economists attributing the spike in core personal consumption expenditures to the war.
The Federal Reserve now officially blames AI for the rise in core goods price inflation. While most FOMC policymakers believe that AI will boost economic output and be disinflationary over time, it's unclear how long it'll take for businesses to optimize AI solutions and maximize sales and profits. This leaves open the possibility of AI fueling already elevated inflation.
