Warsh Faces Bond Market Backlash as Inflation Fears Mount
Fed Chief Kevin Warsh faces a difficult decision regarding monetary policy after his recent statements on inflation unsettled bond markets.
Warsh's declarations that he would bring down inflation without signaling interest rate hikes triggered a sharp selloff in bonds, forcing him to choose between defying President Donald Trump's desire for easier monetary policy or battling fellow U.S. central bankers who want to tighten it.
The bond market reaction was severe, with 30-year Treasury yields rising above 5.2%, a 19-year high, after Warsh hinted that he might switch up the Fed's inflation yardstick from its traditional 2% year-over-year target in the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index.
Past Fed chiefs have used the global central bankers' conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming to prefigure policy changes, but Warsh has stuck to his promise of providing no guidance on the rate path. He plans to check in with the task forces he handpicked to deliver recommendations by 2026 and may share their thoughts at the conference.
