Warsh Faces Calls to Disclose Trump Conversations Amid Independence Concerns
A group of Democratic senators has called on Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh to publicly disclose his communications with President Trump, citing recent reporting that raises 'sincere doubts' about the central bank's independence from the White House under Warsh's leadership.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Warsh and Trump have spoken 'repeatedly' since Warsh was confirmed in April to replace former Chair Jerome Powell. This has led the lawmakers to express concern that the Fed may not be maintaining its independence from the White House.
The senators pointed out that while some communication with the President is acceptable, the 'repeated, free-flowing conversations' described in the reporting are unprecedented and raise questions about the Fed's relationship with the White House. They also noted that Warsh has declined to confirm his conversations with Trump on multiple occasions.
In a letter to Warsh, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and other Democratic senators emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in monetary policy decisions. They wrote, 'Effective conduct of monetary policy depends on transparency, accountability, and integrity from the Chair, all of which are undermined by secret conversations with the President.'
