Warsh Faces Crucial Fed Vote Amid Market Expectations of Rate Hike
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is facing a crucial vote as policymakers meet to decide on interest rates. Markets are pricing in a high probability of a quarter-percentage-point increase, with the federal funds rate currently at 3.50% to 3.75%. The meeting follows a previous 9-3 vote to hold rates in July, where Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan, Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari supported a hike.
The policy debate centers on whether recent inflation pressure will fade or become more entrenched. August headline consumer price inflation ran at 3.4%, while the core rate was 2.4%. Governor Christopher Waller urged patience in remarks on September 3, suggesting that data should be assessed before making a decision.
New York Fed President John Williams also advocated for a wait-and-see approach, saying it seemed sensible. However, Governor Michael Barr expressed concern that temporary inflation could take deeper hold and was open to a hike, but not set on one.
