Warsh Faces Inflation Test as Rate Hike Looms

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is facing a crucial decision on interest rates as inflation remains elevated. The latest data shows oil prices above $100 a barrel, adding pressure to the Fed's inflation outlook. A rate hike is expected by financial markets, with economists predicting a quarter-point increase to a 3.75%-4.00% range.

Warsh has emphasized the need for price stability and attention to signals from financial market pricing. However, President Donald Trump had initially expected Warsh to cut interest rates, although he has since blamed his fellow central bankers for this failure.

Some economists argue that a rate hike would be the wrong move, given the current inflation readings. JPMorgan economist Michael Feroli projects the Fed will raise rates on Wednesday but thinks it's a 'closer call' than the 90% chance priced in by futures markets.
