Warsh Faces Scrutiny at Jackson Hole Over Inflation Strategy
The upcoming Federal Reserve symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming will be an opportunity for new Chair Kevin Warsh to address early concerns and missteps during his tenure. According to Natixis economists Christopher Hodge and Selin Aker, the event will allow Warsh to share his vision for the central bank.
Hodge and Aker argue that Warsh has focused on potential long-term changes to the Fed and eschewed forward guidance, which has contributed to market uncertainty. They point out that investors are seeking reassurance from the Fed that it can bring inflation back under control.
Warsh's focus on the supply side of the economy will likely remain a key theme in his speech, with an emphasis on US productivity and its potential to drive growth without sparking inflationary pressures.
The Natixis economists also expect Warsh to address some of his previous statements from the July FOMC, particularly those that could be interpreted as downplaying the Fed's role in addressing inflation. They hope for a clear statement outlining the Fed's plan to return inflation to target levels using monetary policy tools.
