Warsh Faces Tough Decision on July Interest Rate Move Amid Inflation Concerns
As inflation continues to be a concern for many Americans, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is facing a difficult decision about how to address it. The Fed's dual mandate of maximum employment and stable prices is at odds with its current goal of bringing inflation back down to its 2% target.
The central bank has two main tools it uses to address both goals: its balance sheet and the federal funds rate, a benchmark for interest rates. Typically, the Fed raises its target range for the rate to tame inflation, but lowers it to stimulate job growth.
However, with recent swings in inflation and employment data, it's unclear how the Fed will proceed at its upcoming July meeting. Inflation slowed down in June after three months of acceleration, but some forecasters expect it may tick back up due to renewed U.S.-Iran hostilities.
