Warsh Floats Plan to Reduce Interest Rate Meetings

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is considering reducing the number of meetings where interest rates are set. This would be a significant change to how the Fed has operated for decades, with the current eight-meeting schedule in place since 1981. The proposal was raised during last week's Federal Open Market Committee meeting, and it follows Warsh's broader push to reshape how the central bank conducts itself.

Warsh argues that financial markets have become too reliant on signals from the Fed rather than economic data. This is why he has scaled back the central bank's policy guidance in recent years. Some economists agree that fewer meetings would encourage policymakers to focus more on economic data between meetings and reduce the perception that every gathering requires a policy signal.

Russell Rhoads, a clinical associate professor of financial management at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, disagrees with this approach. He believes that cutting the number of meetings is going in the wrong direction, and that it may lead to other members of the FOMC being further scrutinized as investors search for clues about what the Fed may do next.
