Warsh Hails AI as Economic Game-Changer Amid Rate Silence
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh has been open about his views on AI and its potential economic benefits, but he remains tight-lipped about interest rates. In nine weeks since taking office, Warsh has declined to discuss what recent economic trends mean for rates, a departure from the long-held practice of providing 'forward guidance.'
Warsh's focus is instead on AI, which he believes can boost productivity and even lower inflation, giving the Fed room to cut rates. He argues that robust business investment, driven by demand for AI infrastructure, 'is preparing the ground for future growth.'
'The productivity task force is focused very much on AI and how that could be disinflationary,' said Derek Tang, a policy economist at Monetary Policy Analytics.
Warsh's views on AI have been praised by some analysts, who see its potential to unleash a productivity boom. However, others have questioned his commitment to fighting inflation, with price increases above the central bank's 2% target for more than four years.
