U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh recently gave his first high-profile speech at the Fed's annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He addressed concerns about inflation and hinted that interest rates may need to be raised to bring it down.

Warsh acknowledged that recent U.S. data show inflation has cooled slightly, but 'they do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved.' He emphasized the importance of ensuring that underlying inflation is moving towards the Fed's 2% target, clearly and at sufficient speed.

The Fed chair pointed out that short-term interest rates are the predominant tool the central bank can use to lower inflation. However, he reiterated his skepticism about providing forward guidance on future rate hikes or cuts.

Warsh's speech has sparked speculation among analysts and investors, with some expecting the Fed to keep rates unchanged at its next meeting in mid-September. Others believe that interest rates may need to be raised to combat inflation, which remains above the central bank's target at 3.7% in July.

The president, Donald Trump, has been calling for lower interest rates, and his efforts to remove Fed governor Lisa Cook from her position have intensified questions about Warsh's approach to monetary policy.
