Warsh Opens Door to Rate Hike in September Amid Persistent Inflation Concerns

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has raised expectations for an interest rate hike in September at the central bank's upcoming meeting. In his speech at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, Warsh said that inflation hasn't 'meaningfully improved' despite a slight decrease in gas prices. This suggests that he may support raising borrowing costs to combat inflation.

The government's next price report, set to be released just days before the September meeting, could play a crucial role in determining whether the Fed acts on its concerns about inflation. Economists and other Fed policymakers praised Warsh's speech, but some expressed caution and criticism during the conference.

Warsh has avoided commenting extensively on inflation since taking office, but his latest remarks indicate that he views it as a persistent issue. He noted that more than half of the goods and services tracked by the government have seen prices rise 3% or more over the past year, which is 'well above' the roughly one-third that saw such increases in the two decades before the pandemic.

While some analysts saw strong hints at a rate increase in September, others were less convinced. Austan Goolsbee, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, said that Fed officials focus on the state of the economy and what is needed to stabilize prices and maximize employment.
