Warsh Proposes Fewer Fed Meetings Amid Interest Rate Uncertainty

Kevin Warsh, Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, is proposing to reduce the number of times the central bank's rate-setting committee meets each year. This move would give the United States fewer scheduled opportunities to adjust interest rates than at any point since Paul Volcker standardized the eight-meeting calendar in 1981.

The proposal was first floated by Warsh at a recent Federal Open Market Committee gathering, where officials were asked to send him their views on the matter rather than opening a full debate. This procedural detail matters, as it suggests that a decision is already in motion.

The timing of this proposal is notable, coming after a 9-3 vote to hold the benchmark federal funds rate steady at its current range of 3.50% to 3.75%. Three committee members voted for an immediate quarter-point increase, citing more than five consecutive years of above-target inflation as requiring action now.

The reduction in meeting frequency is not an isolated procedural reform, but rather compounds a structural change Warsh has already made by eliminating forward guidance, the Fed's practice of signaling where rates are headed between meetings. This combination creates something no modern Fed has attempted: a calendar with both fewer scheduled decision points and no advance signal between them.
