Warsh Reaffirms 2% Inflation Target Amid Escalating Iran War
US Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining price stability despite high inflation caused by the escalating Iran war. Speaking after a two-day meeting, Warsh emphasized that the committee is focused on understanding and addressing underlying inflation dynamics.
The Fed's goal remains to achieve 2% inflation target, with no soft targets or implicit higher targets. Warsh noted that some market participants have mistakenly believed the Fed tolerates higher inflation, but this is not the case. He emphasized that the focus is on broadening growth and limiting inflation.
Warsh also addressed the issue of forward guidance in monetary policy, stating it's more prudent in crisis situations but may be worth revisiting in benign conditions. Central bankers tend to tighten policy when they see stable employment and rising underlying inflation, he added.
