Warsh Reaffirms Fed's Hawkish Stance: 2% Target Firm and Fixed

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh emphasized the central bank's commitment to its firm and fixed 2% PCE inflation target in his debut Jackson Hole keynote address. He warned that underlying price pressures persist, and the Fed is prepared to act if the disinflation momentum stalls.

Warsh also highlighted the shift away from explicit 'forward guidance' about interest rate trajectories, prioritizing policy flexibility instead. This change means financial markets will have to rely on incoming data rather than central bank signaling for rate projections.

The Fed's long-term annual inflation target remains at 2% under the PCE metric, and nearly half of individual product prices tracked by the Fed increased at an annual rate above 3% over the past six months. The FOMC maintained its benchmark federal funds rate at a target range of 3.50% to 3.75% during its July meeting.
