Warsh Reiterates 'Humble' Approach to Monetary Policy at Jackson Hole
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized his stance on forward guidance at the Economic Symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He noted that the central bank's focus should be on prices and stated that broad financial conditions are not restrictive.
Warsh reiterated his preference for less guidance from the Fed, arguing that providing markets with little indication of monetary policy is essential to maintaining a 'humble and never naive' approach.
The Fed chair highlighted that inflation has been elevated for 65 months and placed responsibility squarely with the central bank. He stressed the importance of identifying underlying trends in inflation rather than being swayed by idiosyncratic factors.
Warsh also noted that broad measures of inflation have fallen significantly since 2022, but progress since then 'has been modest.' He said the Fed's predominant focus should be on prices and that the central bank must be confident that underlying inflation is moving towards its objective at sufficient speed.
