Warsh Sets Stage for Potential Rate Hike in September

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh raised expectations for a potential interest rate hike in September during his speech at the annual Jackson Hole economic conference.

Warsh's comments suggest that he wants to see clear evidence of cooling inflation before making any decisions, but since underlying inflation hasn't improved despite declining gas prices, a rate hike is now more likely. This would be a politically awkward move for the Fed, given the upcoming midterm elections and President Donald Trump's history of criticizing the central bank.

Austan Goolsbee, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, downplayed the importance of election timing, stating that Fed officials focus on 'what is the state of the economy, and what do we need to do to stabilize prices and maximize employment?'
