Warsh Sets Stage for Showdown with Trump Over Interest Rates

At this year's Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivered a speech that may have set him on a collision course with President Trump. Warsh has been critical of the Fed's use of forward guidance, which he believes has become too reliant on market information and can lead to distorted expectations.

Warsh emphasized the need for clear market signals, as unfiltered as possible from market internals, including asset prices, Treasury securities, foreign exchange values, credit costs, and commodity prices. He noted that forward guidance can obscure policymakers' ability to make rate decisions based on hard data.

In his speech, Warsh also highlighted the importance of price stability over employment in the Fed's dual mandate. This focus has led markets to expect rate hikes, which could put Warsh at odds with Trump. The President had previously pushed for rate cuts despite elevated inflation and recently accused the committee of keeping rates too high.
