Warsh Shifts Focus: Inflation Now Top Priority for the Federal Reserve
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has shifted the central bank's focus on inflation in one sentence. In his inaugural Jackson Hole speech, he stated that the Fed would 'deliver price stability' and emphasized the importance of underlying inflation moving to the FOMC's long-term target 'clearly and at sufficient speed.'
This change in focus leaves the door wide open for rate hikes, which is not good news for a historically expensive stock market driven by artificial intelligence. The AI infrastructure build-out has been the top catalyst for Wall Street, with debt financing this expansion.
The Fed's primary goal now is to ensure that inflation declines to 2% and does so in a timely manner. Warsh pointed out that higher long-duration Treasury bond yields have already done some of the work by raising borrowing costs and tempering above-average inflation.
