Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh emphasized the need to combat inflation in his highly-anticipated speech at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium on August 28, 2026. The central bank has been grappling with persistently high inflation rates above its 2% target for over five years. Warsh stated that 'we must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed. Otherwise, we have work to do.'

Inflation eased slightly in July, but oil prices spiked due to the Middle East crisis. Warsh noted that certain sectors of the economy like housing and agriculture are showing strains, while consumer spending and job market remain solid.

Warsh did not explicitly call for an interest rate hike but suggested a focus on bringing down prices. He also mentioned 'the practice of forward guidance should be limited' and has 'overstayed its welcome.'
