Warsh Signals Higher Interest Rates as Fed Maintains Hawkish Stance
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh has delivered his first semiannual testimony before Congress, offering investors a clear indication of the potential direction for interest rates. In his testimony, Warsh reiterated the central bank's commitment to maintaining independence from political influence.
The chairman placed significant emphasis on prices across the economy, stating that the committee has no tolerance for persistently elevated inflation and shares a resolute commitment to restoring price stability. The Consumer Price Index rose 3.5% year over year in June, with shelter and food continuing to see price increases for households.
The market seems to be shrugging off this hawkish monetary policy, with the S&P 500 climbing 10% in 2026 as of July 22. However, CME Group's FedWatch tool indicates a 90% probability that the fed funds rate will be higher at the end of this year.
