Warsh Signals Interest Rate Hike to Tackle Inflation
Fed chair Kevin Warsh has signaled his willingness to raise US interest rates in order to combat inflation. In a speech at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, he expressed concerns about the high inflation rate and stated that 'we have work to do' if it does not come down quickly enough.
Warsh pointed out that while recent economic data shows a slight slowdown, this is not an indication of a change in the underlying trend. He emphasized that inflation remains too high, at 3.4 percent, and has remained above the Federal Reserve's target rate of 2.0 percent for more than five years.
The war in Iran and resulting energy crisis have contributed to the high inflation rate, according to Warsh. He stated that the Fed should prioritize prices at present, suggesting that interest rates may need to be raised in order to curb inflation.
