Warsh Signals Rate Hikes May Be Needed to Combat Inflation
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh expressed concerns about inflation in his speech at the annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He stated that recent US reports show a slight cooling of inflation, but 'they do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved.'
Warsh emphasized the need for underlying inflation to move towards the central bank's objective 'clearly and at sufficient speed.' He did not imply an imminent rate hike but dismissed perceptions that inflation is no longer a threat.
The Fed Chairman acknowledged progress in artificial intelligence, which has led to substantially higher growth potential. However, he noted that there are still unknowns regarding AI's impact on productivity and the job market.
