Warsh Slams Fed's 2020 Framework as Inflation Policy Mistake

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh criticized the central bank's 2020 framework during his congressional testimony, calling it a mistake that did not achieve its objective.

The framework allowed inflation to run moderately above the target for some time following periods of persistent undershooting, with the goal of keeping longer-term inflation expectations anchored around 2%.

Warsh said that this approach imposed an 'undue tax' on Americans and led to elevated inflation over the past five years. He added that if this framework had been called out sooner, Americans wouldn't have been burdened with elevated inflation to the same degree.

The Fed's 2020 framework also revised the central bank's approach to employment, focusing on 'shortfalls' from maximum employment rather than responding to both 'deviations' above and below maximum employment.
