Warsh Sparks Debate with Unconventional Approach at the Federal Reserve

Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh initiated a debate on how the central bank works by forming five panels of outside experts to examine the Fed's reading of the economy and its explanations.

The move comes as a surprise, given the traditional reluctance of the Fed to have outsiders do this work, and its tendency to move slowly when it does.

Warsh believes that by bringing in credible outsiders, the Fed can build support for change within the organization. He has argued for over a decade that the Fed's forecasts breed conformity and its data are stale by the time policymakers see them.

The task forces have been met with both enthusiasm and skepticism from committee members. Some view their record more charitably, having said inflation was returning closer to target before tariffs and war in the Middle East stoked new pressures.
