Warsh Speech Looms Large as Asian Stocks Turn Cautious

Asian stocks turned cautious on Friday after a tech rally fueled by Nvidia's strong earnings report. The chipmaker saw its shares jump nearly 9% overnight, driving up Taiwanese stocks by 1.2%. However, other markets in Asia were less optimistic, with South Korea's KOSPI falling 1% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng down 0.3%. The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged up just 0.1%, while Japan's Nikkei rose 0.5%.

The market is also bracing for a speech by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Symposium later in the day. Analysts are skeptical that he will provide forward guidance on interest rates, but markets are still holding out hope that he might offer some clarity to reduce uncertainty surrounding the Fed's reaction function.

Warsh has been criticized for not providing enough concrete steps to address persistently high inflation during his previous meetings. With futures implying a 35% chance of an interest rate hike by September 16 and being fully priced for a move by December, markets are on edge waiting for any signals from the Fed.
